The Company has had something of a checkered career. When William Harley and his friend Walter Davidson built their first 116 cc bike in 1901, which took 2 years to complete, it was a disastrous failure, requiring excessive pedal power to keep any kind of momentum. . It would not take the hills of Milwaukee where the boys worked out of a wooden shed. Undeterred, they went back to the drawing board and initially started selling bike engines to do-it-yourself enthusiasts. Their first breakthrough came in 1905 with a larger bike and this went into full production selling 50 in that year. The first Harley Davidson dealer was a Mr. C.H. Lang who sold three of these in his Chicago store. By 1911 output was up to 150 per annum and dealerships were springing up around the country in the wake of the success and rave reviews the bikes were earning. Production was ramped up tremendously during the first world war, when 20,000 Harleys were produced for the military. Whilst still operating out of Milwaukee, the Company moved into bigger multi-storied premises to keep up with demand. The bikes rugged features and rugged performance enhanced its reputation and made it the biggest and most famous bike manufacture around the world. It eventually ended up being only one of two American bike manufacturers that survived after the 30’s recession; in the early 1900’s it was competing with 115 others to attract the growing numbers of people wanting to get in on this innovative and fast form of travel. One of Harley’s biggest competitors was the Merkel brand which slogged it out sale by sale with its own network of dealers and fans.
